Job Description
About the role
Due to the continued growth of our accounting and tax practice, we are looking for a qualified or part-qualified Accountant to join our team. You will look after your own portfolio of Maltese and international clients — from bookkeeping and management accounts right through to year-end financial statements — and you will act as the day-to-day point of contact for those clients.
A key part of this role is the preparation of corporate income tax returns and tax computations for companies. Experience in tax is a strong advantage, but it is not essential: if you have a solid accounting background and are genuinely willing to learn, we will provide full, structured training in Maltese corporate tax, working alongside our experienced Tax team.
You will report to the Accounts Manager and Partners, and work closely with our Audit, Tax and Corporate Services teams.
Main tasks and responsibilities
Bookkeeping and accounts
Maintaining accurate books of accounts for a portfolio of clients, including posting of sales, purchases, bank and journal entries
Preparing bank, supplier, customer and intercompany reconciliations on a periodic basis
Preparing monthly or quarterly management accounts and supporting schedules
Preparing year-end closing entries and annual financial statements in accordance with GAPSME / IFRS and the Companies Act (Cap. 386)
Preparing and filing VAT returns and recapitulative statements, and assisting with payroll and FSS submissions where required
Preparing audit-ready files and supporting the audit team during audit engagements
Corporate tax
Preparing corporate income tax computations and company income tax returns for submission to the Commissioner for Revenue
Allocating profits to the tax accounts (FTA, MTA, UA, IPA, FIA) and preparing related schedules
Assisting with shareholder tax refund claims and the related documentation
Computing provisional tax and tax payable, and monitoring filing and payment deadlines
Handling queries and correspondence with the Commissioner for Revenue on behalf of clients
Keeping up to date with changes in Maltese income tax and VAT legislation, budget measures and filing requirements
Client care
Acting as the main day-to-day contact for your client portfolio — building strong, long-term relationships
Liaising with clients to obtain records and information, and explaining accounting and tax matters clearly
Managing your own workload and deadlines, flagging issues early to the Accounts Manager and Partners
Identifying opportunities to add value for clients, e.g. improvements to their record-keeping or tax efficiency
Ensuring client files are complete, accurate and properly maintained in line with firm procedures and confidentiality requirements
Requirements
Qualified, part-qualified or studying towards ACCA / ACA / CIMA / MIA (or equivalent), or a degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline
At least 2 years’ experience in an accounting role, ideally within an accounting or audit firm (flexible depending on seniority)
Hands-on experience in bookkeeping and preparing financial statements from trial balance stage
Experience in preparing Maltese corporate tax returns is a strong advantage — candidates without tax experience but with a genuine willingness to learn are very much encouraged to apply
Good working knowledge of GAPSME / IFRS and Maltese VAT legislation
Proficient in accounting software (e.g. Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, Shireburn) and strong MS Excel skills
Client-focused, with good written and verbal communication skills in English (Maltese an asset)
Organised, accurate and able to manage multiple deadlines with minimal supervision
Strong sense of professionalism, ethics and confidentiality
