We're looking for a Head of Accounting and Tax Compliance to join Sheltons Malta. In this role, you'll lead and develop the Accounting and Tax Compliance team, oversee the delivery of client accounting and tax compliance work, and ensure work is completed accurately, efficiently, and to the professional standard expected by our international clients.

This is a full-time position based in Malta.

About the Role

As Head of Accounting and Tax Compliance, you will be responsible for leading the Accounting and Tax Compliance function and overseeing the delivery of client accounting, tax compliance and assist with tax advisory services across our portfolio of international clients.

You will set clear goals, delegate effectively, monitor team performance, review the quality and timeliness of work, and support the team in resolving complex client accounting and tax matters. You will also play a key role in improving internal processes, managing client expectations, maintaining knowledge resources, and supporting a boutique firm culture where senior team members lead by example and assist where needed.

This role is ideal for an experienced accounting and tax professional currently operating in a senior or head-of-function capacity within a Maltese corporate services provider or accounting firm serving international clients.

Key Responsibilities

Lead, manage, and develop the Accounting and Tax Compliance team, setting clear goals and ensuring strong accountability across the function.
Delegate work clearly, monitor progress, review outputs, and support the team in meeting client, statutory, and internal deadlines.
Oversee the delivery of and provide technical insight on client accounting and tax compliance work, including management accounts, year-end compliance, VAT and income tax compliance, assist with tax advisory, and related support.
Ensure work is delivered accurately, efficiently, and in line with client expectations and professional standards.
Monitor team revenue, productivity, and service quality, identifying areas for improvement and implementing practical measures to optimise performance.
Pre-empt and manage client-related issues, ensuring expectations are set clearly and complaints or escalations are handled professionally and empathetically, working closely with the Client Relationship Executives.
Work closely with other teams within the company to ensure the smooth coordinated delivery of work.
Keep abreast of emerging laws, practices, and technical developments in accounting and tax, and share relevant knowledge with the wider team.
Create, maintain, and update knowledge libraries, templates, and internal guidance to support consistency and efficiency.
Deliver internal training and provide practical day-to-day support to junior and senior team members.
Contribute to a boutique firm environment by being hands-on, solutions-oriented, and willing to assist with matters outside the strict job description when necessary.

What We're Looking For

A warranted CPA with ACCA/MIA qualification, B.Com (Accountancy), or equivalent professional accounting background.
Minimum 10 years of experience working in an accounting role, ideally within a professional firm servicing international clients, with at least 4 years of experience in a role involving tax compliance responsibilities.
Minimum 5 years of management experience leading a team in an international and professional setting.
Minimum 5 years of client-facing experience within an international and professional services environment.
Strong technical knowledge of accounting, tax compliance, and finance, including IFRS, GAPSME, Maltese VAT, and Maltese income tax compliance requirements.
Strong knowledge of accounting software, with Xero experience considered an asset.
Excellent leadership and managerial skills, with the ability to delegate clearly, monitor performance, and lead by example.
A goal-driven, organized, and assertive individual, with a detail-oriented working style and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
A collaborative boutique-firm mindset, with readiness to support the wider team whenever needed.
Mastery of the English language, both spoken and written.
