Responsible for cutting, bending, fixing, and installing reinforcement steel (rebar) according to structural drawings and specifications.

The Rebar Worker is responsible for the cutting, bending, assembling, positioning, and fixing of reinforcement steel (rebar) used in reinforced concrete structures. The worker must be able to read and follow structural drawings, reinforcement schedules, and site instructions and ensure that reinforcement is installed accurately and safely before concrete is poured.

Key Responsibilities

Read and interpret structural drawings, reinforcement details, bar bending schedules, and construction specifications.

Measure, mark, cut, and bend reinforcement bars according to the required dimensions and shapes.

Fix and tie reinforcement bars using appropriate tying wire, tools, and techniques.

Assemble reinforcement cages and mats for foundations, slabs, beams, columns, walls, tanks, retaining walls, and other concrete structures.

Position reinforcement accurately according to drawings, including correct spacing, laps, anchorage, bends, and concrete cover.

Install reinforcement supports, spacers, chairs, links, stirrups, and other associated reinforcement components.

Check reinforcement arrangements before concrete placement and rectify any discrepancies identified by supervisors or engineers.

Ensure reinforcement is properly secured to prevent movement or displacement during concrete pouring.

Assist with the installation of starter bars, dowels, couplers, embedded reinforcement, and other reinforcement connections where required.

Use hand tools and appropriate equipment for cutting, bending, tying, and handling reinforcement steel.

Safely handle, lift, move, and store reinforcement materials on site.

Coordinate with carpenters, concrete workers, site supervisors, engineers, and other trades to ensure reinforcement works are completed in the correct sequence.

Maintain the work area in a clean, organised, and safe condition.

Follow approved method statements, risk assessments, site procedures, and construction specifications.

Comply with all applicable health and safety requirements, including the correct use of PPE.

Report damaged materials, incorrect reinforcement, unsafe conditions, or discrepancies in drawings to the site supervisor.

Assist with inspection and quality-control checks before concrete is poured.

Carry out other reasonable duties related to reinforcement and construction works as instructed by the site supervisor.

Required Skills and Competencies

Practical experience as a Rebar Worker, Steel Fixer, or Reinforcement Fixer.

Good understanding of reinforced concrete construction and reinforcement fixing methods.

Ability to read and understand structural drawings and reinforcement schedules.

Ability to accurately measure, cut, bend, and position reinforcement steel.

Good knowledge of rebar spacing, lap lengths, anchorage, bends, links, and concrete cover.

Ability to work independently and as part of a construction team.

Good physical fitness and ability to perform manual work, including lifting and handling reinforcement materials.

Good attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Ability to follow instructions and comply with site safety procedures.

Health & Safety Responsibilities

The Rebar Worker must:

Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Follow site-specific health and safety rules and instructions.

Use tools and equipment safely and correctly.

Take appropriate precautions when handling sharp, heavy, or long reinforcement bars.

Maintain safe access and working areas around reinforcement operations.

Immediately report hazards, accidents, defective equipment, or unsafe working conditions.

Follow instructions relating to lifting, working at height, excavation areas, plant and machinery, and other site hazards.

Working Environment

The role is primarily site-based and involves working on construction projects in various weather conditions. The position may require prolonged standing, bending, lifting, carrying materials, working in confined areas, and working at different levels or elevations depending on the project requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

Previous experience in rebar fixing/steel fixing is preferred.

Relevant construction experience will be considered an advantage.

Experience working from structural drawings and reinforcement schedules is desirable.

Formal qualifications or trade certification in steel fixing/reinforcement works are an advantage but may not be mandatory where suitable practical experience can be demonstrated.
