Position Overview

A motivated and detail-oriented Microbiologist is sought to join a professional laboratory team on either a full-time or part-time basis. The role involves microbiological testing, laboratory analysis, quality assurance, method development, and accurate reporting while maintaining high standards of safety and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will perform routine microbiological testing on environmental, clinical, and product samples, including culture, enumeration, and microbial identification. The role also involves preparing media and reagents, handling samples correctly, and operating laboratory equipment such as incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, PCR thermocyclers, and biosafety cabinets.

Responsibilities include supporting the development, optimisation, and validation of microbiological methods, evaluating new laboratory techniques, and contributing to the implementation of molecular and rapid microbiology methods where appropriate.

The candidate will maintain accurate laboratory records and reports while following relevant SOPs, quality management systems, and GLP, GMP, or ISO requirements. Participation in audits, proficiency testing, and corrective and preventive actions may also be required.

The role also involves analysing laboratory data, interpreting results, preparing technical reports, maintaining equipment and laboratory supplies, and following established biosafety, chemical safety, waste disposal, and decontamination procedures.

Requirements

Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, or a related discipline. A Master’s degree or higher qualification will be considered an advantage.

Previous experience within a microbiology laboratory environment is required, while practical knowledge of aseptic techniques, culture-based methods, microbial identification, and basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR is preferred.

Familiarity with laboratory quality systems, SOPs, record-keeping procedures, and relevant GLP, GMP, or ISO standards is important. Experience with laboratory instrumentation, routine maintenance, and calibration is also desirable.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellent attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving abilities, strong written and verbal communication skills in English, and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a laboratory team.

Experience in environmental monitoring, product microbiology, or clinical microbiology will be considered an asset.
